PRINTED.

It finally worked this time and the final outcome looks really nice. Very pleased with my hard work and efforts, and it has paid off - in style.

Third time lucky - not.

The spacing was a bit wrong again, which is annoying, but I think I have it completely right now and will get it done on Friday.

Wednesday, 27 April 2011

Printing attempt number 2.

The spacings weren't right, so once again need to wait until next week to print it out properly.

Printing

Initial attempt at printing failed, I need to put a gutter/bleed in.

Hopefully it will work next week.

Holidays

When I originally planned my time plan, I forgot to take into account of the holidays. I am going to design the magazine during the holidays and get it printed when I come back.

Monday, 21 March 2011

Finished writing.

That's me completed all articles, and edited them to all make sense, and fixed any spelling errors, and so on.

Now I need to start designing the finished piece in Adobe InDesign, which I have a good knowledge of how to use. I have a plan in my head, but mostly I design in the moment so i've not thought it out to any great extent.

3 Articles

I've wrote three articles in the past week for the magazine.

Istanbul was completed on the 8th, I finished the results of the View from the Street Poll on the 9th, and the Hillsborough spread was finished today.

The only article left is the main big one, so I'm hoping to have that finished by this time next week. I'm slightly behind in terms of initial schedule, but I set myself early deadlines which ii'm glad I done as it's making me feel a lot safer.

Greatest XI Update

My friend got back to me and has filled in his Greatest XI. I just need to edit it a little to make sure it reads well and that'll be that. The information will go into a graphic later.

Yesterday I wrote the article on Samii Hyypia for the Player Update feature and so that is me half way there with my articles. 4/8.

Writing for the Magazine

Writining my articles has been going pretty well so far, I started off with my article about formations. I used my own knowledge and opinion in this article, and later on I will design the graphic for it.

I also completed the The Future is Bright Red article today on some Liverpool youngsters. I needed to research a little about some players to find out some information like birth-places and such, but it was mainly through my own knowledg that I wrote the piece.

So i'm not writing the magazine chronologically so far, and i'm waiting on my friend getting back to me about his Greatest XI.

Update

I have settled on creating a short 24-magazine that is all about Liverpool Football Club.

The structure of my magazine is as follows:

1 - Front Cover
2 & 3 - Introduction Page
4 & 5 - Contents
6 & 7 - View from the Street, Former Player/Manager Update, Greatest XI
8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 - Revitalisation Article
14 & 15 - The Future is Bright Red
16 & 17 - Let's Talk Formations
18 & 19 - Great European Nights
20, 21, 22, 23 - Heysel/Hillsborough
24 - Back Cover

When numbering my pages for design purposes, the following will apply:

1 & 2 - Introduction Page
3 & 4 - Contents
5 & 6 - View from the Street, Former Player/Manager Update, Greatest XI
7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 - Revitalisation Article
13 & 14 - The Future is Bright Red
15 & 16 - Let's Talk Formations
17 & 18 - Great European Nights
19, 20, 21, 22 - Heysel/Hillsborough

This structure is 90% final and most likely to be the finished structure.

When binding a magazine and putting it together, you have to consider how printing and binding actually works. Magazines are put together with A3 sheets of paper. This sheet of paper will be printed double-sided. 4 pages will feature on the sheet, 2 pages on the front and 2 pages on the reverse side. It is imperative that I have to consider what pages will go on what sheet and how this will all combine together to create a smooth, flowing consistent magazine.

The following is how my magazine will need to be printed:
Front and back cover with pages 1 and 22Pages 2 and 21 – Pages 3 and 20Pages 4 and 19 – Pages 5 and 18Pages 6 and 17 – Pages 7 and 16Pages 8 and 15 – Pages 9 and 14Pages 10 and 13 – Pages 11 and 12

Progress

Well, so far I have my idea, I have filled out my brief and have the basis of my Graded Unit in process.

I am going to to produce a Football-themed magazine, using Adobe InDesign.

The magazine would need to include:

  • Front Cover
  • Contents Page
  • Introductory/Welcome page.
  • Questions Page.
  • Interview Page.
  • Feature Articles
  • Expert Columns
  • Advertisements
  • Quirky Features
  • Back Cover.

My magazine will hopefully be around 50 pages long, depending on a spectrum of variables.

I have a number of ideas for articles, such as:

  • Professionalism in football
  • Sexism in football
  • Liverpool FC feature
  • Controversies
  • Look to the future
  • The debate on fielding ‘weakened’ teams
  • SPL Reform
  • The FA Youth Shake Up
  • Football disasters
  • Greatest teams
  • Let’s talk Formations

Introduction

I'm David Chalmers, a 20 year old student studying HNC Communication with Media at Forth Valley College.

Okay, so the main purpose of this blog is to document any ideas, or progress with all things relating to my Graded Unit.

So far, my lone idea has been to create a magazine. I would like this to be Sports-themed, but I don't know much more than that. I can't write every article so I don't know who I could get to write articles for me, or what other jobs I would need helping with. It's my job to decide on every detail about this project and to actively make things happen.

I can only think of this option because I have already done a Radio Show, while we are shooting a Video in another class, so I thought it would be good to keep things varied and do a Magazine for my Graded Unit, seeing as at the end of the day, my ideal job is to be a writer for Football Magazine 'Four Four Two'. This would be good exercise for writing, or editing, or anything related to journalism, and probably a good experience for me, and especially relevant considering my career ideas.

That's all I have to say for now, so keep on checking for updates.
